Archie SHEPP,

tenor sax, soprano, pianist, singer, jazz composer and playwright, American. He was born on 24 May 1937 in Fort Lauderdale in Florida but grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he studied piano, clarinet and alto saxophone before heading to the tenor saxophone: he plays soprano saxophone regularly.

Archie Shepp began to occur in the late 1950s in Paris. Including the famous jazz club Le Chat Qui Pêche, Paris. At its inception in 1960, it is with Cecil Taylor, one of the founders of free jazz, with Disk rebels, Fire Music, Mama Too Tight. It then directs the Attica Blues, big band in the early 1970s, full of Soul and Blues, then styles that influence his work today.

He has recorded with Cecil Taylor (Shepp appears on Air, The World Of Cecil Taylor and Cell Walk For Celeste three albums significant Taylor), John Coltrane, John Tchicai, Chico Hamilton, Sunny Murray, Dave Burell, Philly Joe Jones, Mal Waldron , Horace Parlan, Max Roach, Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Don Cherry, Bill Dixon, Paul Bley, Lester Bowie, Anthony Braxton, Richard Davis, Wayne Dockery, Jimmy Garrison, Roy Haynes, Billy Higgins, Freddie Hubbard, Elvin Jones, Bobby Hutcherson, Steve Lacy, Jimmy Lyons, Abbey Lincoln, Jeanne Lee, McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton, Reggie Workman, Ted Curson, Frank Zappa, and of course Gian Laurent to name a few.
